About Lake Burley Griffin

Lake Burley Griffin is a beautiful and peaceful artificial lake in the heart of Canberra. Completed after the Molonglo River was dammed, this body of water has offered much-needed shade from hot summer suns since 1963!

Lake Burley Griffin is a beautiful, crystal-clear artificial lake in the centre of Canberra. It was completed after construction on an irrigation project that dammed up the Molonglo River required some figuring out and designing! The namesakes for this incredible landmark are American architect Walter Burlesque Griffin, who designed our beautiful city down under; as well, his fame deserves recognition with both lakes bearing those respective titles.

Located in the heart of Canberra, Lake Burley Griffin has been an integral part of our city since its conception. The scenic beauty that this body of water offers not only provides for visual appreciation but also serves as a source of inspiration when designing some major national institutions like Parliament House.

What to do in Lake Burley Griffin

Lake Burley Griffin is a popular destination for locals and visitors alike. The shores of this lake house public parks with free electric BBQ facilities, fenced-in swimming areas that offer views over the city or surrounding area from high points around its perimeter fenceline, picnic tables & toilets, which are perfect spots to sit back and relax while your day goes by! It isn't much else you need to make sure all bodily needs get met other than coming here at least once--and we're glad they did because recreation knows no bounds when experiencing nature up close like this!!

Lake Burley Griffin is a manmade body of water in the heartland that is both ornamental and used for many recreational activities. Canoeing, sailing, paddle boating, windsurfing & dragon boat racing are popular amongst visitors to this scenic spot on Australia's capital city lawns. A rowing course has been set up at one end while National Championships are held here.

Fishing is a popular activity in the lake. The most common species caught are illegally introduced carp, but native Murray cod and European perch also inhabit this waterbody with redfin being another regular catch when fishing for golden courage.
